One of the most unique collaborations of 2018 just launched. Japanese Animation company Saigo No Shudan and Nigerian artist Lady Donli have joined together to create an eclectic narrative to her song Games. Lady Donli is a Neo-soul artist based in the UK. Saigo No Shudan is a Japanese animation company, it’s members include Ayumu Arisaka, Mai Oita, and Ren Kohata. Art is about transcending borders to create magic.
The collaboration was conceptualized and directed by Cameroonian director Irene Ashu (African Girl Doing Things ™). Lady Donli’s music comes from a place of authenticity. The video is an accurate representation of the amount of dynamics within the song. The video is filled with elements of afro-futurism, dance, and moveable art. You can watch the video via Lady Donli’s youtube channel now!
Animation is one of the most unique forms of art in the world. This project was a large integration of art and culture. Saigo No Shudan is a small and well known Japanese animation collective. Their work can be see across various platforms and most recently at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles! The neo-soul tunes combined with Saigo No Shudan style of art will take you through a unique cerebral experience.
The director Irene Ashu was heavily inspired by the way the song made her feel. The beat is both electronic and soulful. Irene also drew inspiration from Busby Berkeley style movement, geometry, and VR technology. Lady Donli emerges as the protagonist of the video taking us through various stages of emotions.
The video was choreographed by Charissa Kroeger and shot by Cleon Arrey. Charissa Kroeger is emerging choreographer based in Los Angeles, California. Cleon Arrey is Cameroonian director and DP based in Long Beach, California. The movement and camera work in the video is sharp, soulful, and fluid. The synergy of Irene’s direction, Lady Donli’s artistry, and Saigo No Shudans animation has a beautiful synergy. This video serves a bridge to push forward female/non-binary talent in the industry and inspire more creative collaborations across borders.
