Marwan Maurice began his career in music after a successful profession as an international basketball player and realizing his heart and passion truly lives within music. His pursuit led him on a journey across the world throughout several countries, bringing the experiences of exploring new interests on different levels, helping him evolve into the diverse talent he is today – a passionate singer, songwriter, instrumentalist and poet.
A couple of months back Marwan dropped the single “I Can’t”, which he describes as a song based on a true story written about a relationship involving a man and a woman. The woman ends up leaving this man due to feeling that he was no longer “good enough” to be with her. After venturing off through life without him, she then comes to the realization that the man who was once not “good enough”, was actually the best thing she could have ever asked for. She then attempts to get him back into her life…
One thing to clear up quickly is that Marwan Maurice is not your chronically stereotyped black music artist. Something I stupidly and continuously also fall prey to – I see a virile-looking young black male artist with an instant appeal and charismatic swagger, and I’m already thinking, “Now let’s hear what his flow and verses are like!” Ladies and gentleman, Marwan Maurice is something else…quite literally.
His voice at all times and in all contexts is utterly soulful and full of generous power, sounding a touch grainy but at the same time as smooth as melting butter- now work that one out for yourselves! This is alternative music, with usually a decidedly blues and rock edge, expressed via the arrangements and an excellent combo of instruments that are both edgy and emotive. Marwan himself is a ‘one-man-band’ which allows for some unusually tantalizing voicings and articulations.
On “I Can’t” and much of his other music, Marwan Maurice establishes a deep emotional bond of intimacy with the listener that few are able to create. It is the perfect blend of melancholic and cathartic, like the element of fire meeting ice. I don’t think it’s an accident that it’s a masterwork. I think Marwan is an emotional yet calculating performer, and certainly a savant at crafting his works into captivating experiences.
Anyone who wants to expand their musical consciousness as well as their music library should have this track, or any other songs by this artist. Marwan Maurice reaches deep into the heart and soul with his catalog of intensely thought provoking songs. If you want to be swept into a song, go right to “I Can’t” and feel the power of Marwan’s performance overcome you!
